DA 12/1/18

Post by Robespierre » Fri Jan 12, 2018 9:22 am

A bit tougher today than the last few puzzles.
1a UNSELFISH (CO)UNSEL, FISH
6a PANIC [Query whether this matches the part of speech of "spinning"] "top" = CAP + IN, then anagram, as indicated by "freak"
9a AMP dd
10a GO ON A BENDER (needbar)* following GOON [= cheap vino] An attempt at an &LIT.
11a SWITCH dd. I needed the internet to verify this is a brand of FJ
12a ESPRESSO Anagram of pro(c)esses.
15a COLLATERAL Hidden word, with "shares" as a clever indicator
18a NERO Take even letters of FOURTEEN starting from the rear end.
19a WINDOW-SHOP WINDOWS, HOP
21a IF NEED BE (DINE, BEEF)*
22a SMILEY dd
25a ON CLOUD NINE ONE + (I)NCLUDIN(G) then anagram as indicated by "delirium", then insert O. Deceptive wordplay as you are driven to look for an explanation that involves ONE containing the rest of the required letters [CLOUDNIN or NCLOUDINI], assuming "including" is a containment indicator.
27a GAG Odd letters of GRANGE
28a, 16a MARES NEST I take the definition to be "imbroglio" but haven't yet worked out the wordplay. Suggestions please!
1d URALS (M)URALS
2d SOPHIA LOREN SO, PHIAl + NERO reversed
3d LOGICIAN Conjurer = MAGICIAN then replace MA by LO [= "watch"]
4d IPOD Take 2nd letters of "his speed to Adidas"
5d HEADSTANDS HEAD, STANDS [= "holds good"]
6d PIERRE PIER + R(OMANC)E
7d NOD dd
8d CARROT TOP Insert ROT + TO inside CARP
13d SEE THE LIGHT SEETHE, LIGHT
14d MERIT BADGE (BRIDGE + TEAM)*
15d CUNEIFORM C + homophone of "uniform"
17d SWIMWEAR "whim" + "swear" then Spoonerised
20d HELOTS H + (STOLE)* Nice surface.
23d YOGIS Y + GI inside OS
24d WISP WIMP then replace M by S. Clever.
26d CAR (S)CAR(Y)

28a, 16a On further reflection, the wordplay here is: TRAM encloses SENSE then the lot is reversed as per the indicator "counter".

6 freak is the definition as in freak out = panic
11 Juice = electrical power, so switch = juice supplier
27 occasionally seems the wrong word. Regularly is better
2 classical seems redundant
6 I know DA has used it before but to say on vacation = take the innards from a word is stretching the language to beaking point
17 Not one of DA's finest Spoonerism, nor surfaces
