DA 12/10/18

Post by zinzan » Fri Oct 12, 2018 12:42 pm

Bit late today. Had a commitment through the morning.
Seeing the long answers I assumed there'd be some theme so I did all others first (bar one). Then the long answers just fell out and one had only to wonder how they worked.
Overall, not that difficult.

ACROSS
1) SUPREME : sup,reme---- : ie remedies.
5) PROSPER : pros,per : easy FOI.
9) UNEARTHED : (are,hunted)* : easy SOI.
10) BOGUS : bo(g/n)us : really clunky way to say G instead of N.
11) RESIGN : ddef : that ol' chestnut, eh ? . . .
13) NINTENDO : n(intend)o : not really sure how the N-O is clued. Suggestions ?
14) SWOOPING : s---,woo,ping
15) ACRID : --ac--,rid : ugh, 'marrow' for middle letters . . .
17) DATES : ddef : presumably from the palm trees in usual depictions.
18) SHORT CUT : ddef : a crew cut of hair.
20) CUSTOMER : suc-<,tome,R----
22) SNIDER : re,din's <
24) TIGHT : ddef
25) DREAMBOAT : (bread,ma--ot)* : just an unattractive clue.
26) SCRAPER : -r-e-(par)c-s- < : painful to parse.
27) RICKETY : -ricket,---y

DOWN
1,7) SQUARE PEG IN A ROUND HOLE : square(tied),peg(throw),(online,had,our)*
2) see 19dn
3) EGREGIOUS : (see,our,gig)* : bit blah.
4) ECHO : -e,-c,-h,-o
5,23) PADDINGTON BEAR : p------n <> adding to, bear : not thrilled.
6) ORBIT : -or-,bit
7) see 1dn
8) RESPONDS : s-e-r-<,po(N)ds
13) BIG SPENDER : b(pigs)*ender
15) AUTONOMIC : --au--,ton(-om-)ic
16) EDUCATES : see< <> ducat : don't like 'uppity' as used.
19,2,21) PRETTY PLEASE WITH SUGAR ON TOP : p,lease after 'pretty',(rough, tips, want,o)*

It was okay. A couple of devices were used too often and a couple of poorly chosen indicators but in DA Land, that happens.
5.1/10 to balance out last week.

12a NINTENDO The wordplay "mean on losing wings" refers to NINTENDO yielding INTEND = "mean" after NINTENDO loses its wings ie its end-letters.

That would certainly be it. Reverse engineering.
