DA 13/10/17

Post by zinzan » Fri Oct 13, 2017 12:10 pm

I was sort of enjoying this one today until my last three in - 18ac, 20ac and 19dn - had me exhaling very heavily.
They held me up a little while but in hindsight I guess they're okay. Just harder.

ACROSS
1) KOGARAH : KO,ga(l/r)ah : one for the Melburnians to shake their heads at. A suburb in Sydney's south.
5) DEVELOP : dev---,Pole< : defrosting = remove 'ice'.
9) AIR PISTOL : (I,is,patrol)* : I'm not a big fan of abbreviations etc being included as anagram fodder. One=I.
10) see 4dn
11) THEME : The Me- : The Met in NY
12) BUTTERCUP : butter(c----)up
13) NOSIEST : no siest- : no siesta may lead to afternoon tiredness . . . tell me about it.
14) RISIBLE : (libr--ies)
16) OTHELLO : -o-t(hell)-o-
18) OBLIQUE : -ob,hm(leek)* : another partial homophone that I don't like.
20) HUARACHES : -h-,--uar--,aches : smarts ? I don't really think 'aches', more 'stings'. Hmm.
22) CRAYS : hm(craze)
24) TWIST : ddef
25) LIQUIDATE : l(I,quid)ate
27) SUGARED : s-ug,a red : shot=slug
28) DRESSUP : ------d,pusser< : pusser=purser apparently

DOWN
1) KMART : km,art : Misdirection is good.
2) GARNETS : (strange)*
3) RAISE HELL : hm(rays),he'll
4,10ac) HIT IT OFF : Hit minus it is H : Fair enough
5) DELETERIOUS : (used,tree,oil)*
6) VOICE : v(o)ice : vacuous=nothing inside
7) LION CUB : cryptic defn
8) PUFF PIECE : puff, piece : 'drawing' as in inhalation ; 'man' as in chess piece
12) BUTTONHOLED : butt,on-,hm(hold) : what I always thought Tony Abbott meant to say when he wanted to 'shirt-front' Putin.
13) NEOPHYTES : (one)*,hm(fights) : so . . . many . . . partial homophones
15,17) SELECTIVE HEARING : s(elect,I've)hearing : stopped=plugged=filled
19) QUASARS : quas-,-ears : seemingly=quasi
21) AFTER : (R)after
23) SWEEP : ddef
26) QED : q----------e,---d

It wasn't too bad but I got sick of homophones. 6/10.

19d I'm sure Zinzan understands the wordplay here but, at the risk of being pedantic, I think it could be more precisely represented as: QUAS(I), (E)ARS*

9 Couldn't agree more re the use of abbreviations etc in anagram fodder. Half a step removed from an indirect anagram.
