DA 07/07/17

I quite enjoyed today's puzzle. It had some neat clues and devious ideas which actually didn't feel forced or clunky. DA's best for a long while.

ACROSS
1) EXIT RAMPS : ex(I)tramps
6) SLANT : sla-n,t
9) ROT : ddef
10) MAKE-BELIEVE : ddef. Neat.
11) TORTOISE : tort,-oise
12) BOLERO : bole,-ro-. A bole is a tree trunk.
15) COOKS : co(ok)s
17) LETTERBOX : Sp(better locks). Nice defn.
18) HEADLINER : head,liner. Simple enough.
19) TO WIT : t(o)wit. Eats nothing. You could quibble on this one but is it really worth the effort ? . . .
21) LEGACY : leg,a,c---y. brAve is the A.
22) ASK FOR IT : (at,risk,of)* It's strictly not &lit but the defn is suggested by the secinds. 'Injury' as anagrind ? See 19ac. I liked it.
25) SPLIT SECOND : split,second. Simple.
27) ALL : totALLy. Neat. See 19ac.
28) PETER : ddef. Slang word for a safe, probs British.
29) BITTER END : bitte,rend

DOWN
1) ERRATIC : --erra--,--tic--
2) INTERROBANG : (bring, near,to)* The defn is the punctuation mark which combines ! and ?
3) RAMBO : hd(-ram bo-) I like the defn.
4,14) MAKES A LONG STORY SHORT : sag-. The surface is neat and the secind is clever.
5) SOBA : sob,a
6) SALLOWEST : s(a,l)lowest
7) AXE : exa- <
8) THEROUX : t(hero)ux. Hero in a tux = formal protagonist. Nice one.
13) ELBOW GREASE : (goes,real,web)*
16) SOLICITOR : so,licit,-or-. Nice surface.
18) HOLDS UP : ddef. The only nasty. Rob's cannot be treated the same as robs, with or without question mark. A shame.
20) TATTLED : t-at,Delt- <. Bit clunky. 'That' with second letter split.
23) FUDGE : ddef
24) VERB : Rev<,B
26) LIT : ddef. Loaded=drunk=lit=lit.=literature.
