A test today of your knowledge of SA & Victorian geography.
1a CHROMOSOME: (OCHRE)* enclosing M + (B)OSOM
6a VIEW: VIE + W
10a RUBELLA: "Source of rub" = defn; RUB + ELLA, where ELLA is contained backwards in THE MALLEE. I'm sure I won't be the only one who wasted time scouring a map for a place name that fitted here.
11a REALISM: (MAILERS)*
12a SUNRAYSIA: US reversed, N(UCLEA)R, homophone of "Asia"
13a OCHRE: CHORE with O shifted
14a SWAN HILL: WAN within SH, ILL
16a ANGLIA: anagram of ALA(RM)ING
19a PREPPY: PREY enclosing PP
20a PICASSOS: PIC, AS A, SOS. Don Quixote & Jacqueline (Roque - his muse & 2nd wife) are titles of Picasso paintings.
23a ROOST: hidden word. Note that Lameroo, being in The Mallee, alludes to the theme.
25a THE MALLEE: ALL + E enclosed within THEME
27a LAYOUTS: LAYABOUTS, then delete AB
28a MILDURA: MILD, (A)URA
29a ACNE: Delete every 2nd letter in "a scanner"
30a PASS THE HAT: dd
1d CORPSES: COR, P(O)SES
2d ROBINVALE: ROB, homophone of "in veil"
3d MULGA: cryptic defn. Another clue where you might have scanned a map for a place name.
4d SPARSELY: homophone of PARSLEY + S (DA has used "salt" before to clue "s")
5d MURRAY: dd; "Rose in aquatic habitat" refers to the swimmer Murray Rose
7d IRISH: IRIS + H(ARVESTED), where IRIS is clued by the last word of the preceding clue, now switching to mean "flower" cf. "river"
8d WIMMERA: (S)WIMMER + A. Note that the crawl is a swimming stroke so a "crawler" is a "swimmer"
9d KAROONDA: (A ROOK AND)*
15d HOPETOUN: HOP, ETON enclosing U
17d LAST LAUGH: (HUGS ALL AT)*
19d PARILLA: PAR, (V)ILLA. Since this is a down clue, "roof" can be taken to refer to VILLA's first letter. This clue and 24d both provided easy-to-get pointers to the theme in 25a.
21d STEWART: STEW, ART. Sir Rod Stewart
22d MT OSSA: MA contains TOSS
24d OUYEN: (Y)OU(R), YEN
28d ALLAH: A(BSOLVE), (HALL) Reference to bushranger Ben Hall. The wordplay could induce you to look for a deity then delete its first letter.
