DA 9/2/18

Post by Robespierre » Fri Feb 09, 2018 7:50 am

A hidden theme centred upon the nursery rhyme Solomon Grundy, the rhyme's name being the solution to 29a, 8d:
Solomon Grundy,
Born on a Monday,
Christened on Tuesday,
Married on Wednesday,
Took ill on Thursday,
Grew worse on Friday,
Died on Saturday,
Buried on Sunday,
That was the end,
Of Solomon Grundy.

The 7 across clues containing "our hero" [Solomon Grundy] make no explicit cross-reference to 29a, 8d (that would make solving too easy), but merely have a reference (eg a day of the week) to a line of the poem, which provides the link to understand the definition for these clues.

1a MATTHEW: MAT, THE, (SHO)W
5a TOTE BAG: (TO BE)* inside TAG [where "chase" refers to the game]

14a TOOK ILL: TOO, KILL
15a BURIED: (L)URI(D) inside BED ["sleeping perhaps" = IN BED]
18a VERSUS: SUS(S) [deletion of final S due to "bottom-pinching"], REV then reversed
19a STUMPER: dd ["capable man in gloves" refers to wicketkeeper in cricket]
21a LEAF BLIGHT: Insert F(ESTERING) in (BALE)*, LIGHT
24a BORN: I assume the wordplay here refers to the fact that the vehicles CAB & CAR can be created, i.e. born, from CA_. Any other ideas?
26a NEGUS: dd ["negus" is title of Ethiopean emperor]
27a KURT WEILL: (WILL TREK)* encloses (LITH)U(ANIA)
28a MARRIED: MARRED encloses I
29a, 8d SOLOMON GRUNDY: SOLO, anagram of G(I)N, ROUND, & MY
1d MEGADETH: (HAD ME GET)
2d THEREFORE: (O)THER (B)EFORE
3d HAWK: homophone of HAWKE
4d WORMHOLES: ROW reversed, MOLES encloses H(ERO)
5d TREVI: (D)IVERT reversed ("pivot" being the reversal indicator)
6d TRAITOROUS: (OUR ART IS TO)*
7d BAIRN: BRAIN then R is moved down
13d MITSUBISHI: MI, I BUST reversed, (HIS)*
15d BOSPHORUS: SOB reversed, P, (C)HORUS
16d EUPHONIUM: (I HUM ONE UP)*

I assume Zinzan will resume his role next week in providing DA explanations.
