DA 20/07/18

Post by zinzan » Fri Jul 20, 2018 11:49 am

Back in town so did the paper version today. It's funny how it seems easier that way.
Still a bit jet-lagged so pleased that today's puzzle wasn't too taxing. There were a few clunky ones and a few DA usuals that people love or hate.

ACROSS
1) SUSTAIN : sus-,(anti)* : 'septic' as anagrind doesn't quite get there.
5) WASSAIL : was,sail
9) LEAKPROOF : (opera,folk)*
10) TABOO : ddef? : contrary responses are 'ta' and 'boo'. Not really opposite but positive and negative, so passable.
11) SHIELA : sh,(a,lie)< : I don't like 'reclining' for 'backwards'. It does mean to 'lying back' but it's not in the sense to reverse something.
12) CLARISSA : (rascal,is)* : I guess most people googled Mrs Dalloway and voile.
14) PATCHOULI : patch,-oul-,-i-
16) CRUEL : cru,e-----l : weird surface.
18) PLEAD : ---p,lead
19) DOODLEBUG : doodle-bug : the V1 rocket in WW2 or the want of doodling.
20) PROPOSAL : prop,(also)*
21) AMOEBA : a Moe BA : good definition and I assume Moe is in Gippsland. Heard of each at least.
24) MARCO : cram<,o : good clue.
25) SPARE ROOM : (moos-)< <> parer : bit clunky. 'rejecting late' is take 'e' from 'moose'/stock. Meh.
26) STELLAR : --ral let's <
27) PASTEUR : past(ure/eur)

DOWN
1) SELLS A PUP : (pulls,--e)*<>sap : I think we could call this &lit. Not a bad effort.
2) STAYED THE COURSE : hm(staid),(to,cheer,us)*
3) APPAL : a,p------,lap< : ie wood/lumber shed from plumber.
4) NOON : no on : how does donating become dating(going out) ? No 'on'. Surface sucks a bit.
5) WAFFLE IRON : waffle,iron
6) SATIRICAL : (casi--,trial)* : not sure what 'derailing' does. Anagrind in 'wrongly' and 12 removes 'on'. Some will say 'no on' should remove ON, not NO. I sort of slightly agree a bit.
7) ALBUS DUMBLEDORE : albu-s,dumb,LED,ore : a Dumbledore is a bumblebee.
8) LOOFA : (a,fool)<
13) FUNDRAISER : funer-- <> (raids)*
15) HYDROFOIL : -h-y,ford<,oil
17) LEGWARMER : leg,warmer
20) PUMAS : up<,mas : what's an 'upcycled' any person ?
22) MEETS : -steem< : ie esteem
23) HARP : (PAHR)*

Yeah but nah. Nah but yeah. Maybe both. Maybe not.
Could only be 5/10.

Three clues, 1a 3 and 20 require word splitting to achieve correct word play. The use of '?' does not justify such a procedure. DA should not be supported in such behaviour it only encourages others to copy him.
3 A stupid surface.
21 Can't agree that this is a good definition. Far too oblique in my opinion. And, yes, Moe is in Gippsland.
27 DA has found a new meaning for finally ie the last three letters of a seven letter word.

7d Isn't the fact that a DUMBLEDORE is a bumblebee irrelevant? ALBUS DUMBLEDORE is the headmaster (principal) of Hogwarts school in the Harry Potter novels.

I know. I just thought it an interesting trivium. Who knew that when they read/watched the stories ?
