DA 10/08/18

Post by zinzan » Fri Aug 10, 2018 10:59 am

Finished this in reasonable time but had to go out. I hoped that the last answer, which I couldn't fathom, would now be clear. It isn't. Yet.

ACROSS
1) CLOSE SHAVE : ddef : a simple starter which should've given a good launch point.
7) PEST : pe-------st
9) REVEAL : re-,veal
10) FORELIMB : (film, bore)* : stupid surface and why 'discombobulated' of all the anagrinds ? 'Flipper' is a definition by example so should've been indicated as much.
11) CHOPSTICKS : ddef : including the basic piano tune that most people know.
13) COTS : S/cot/s : so which way is forward ? I would've thought that 'forward' in a word was toward the front, or first, letter. Not to the back of the word.
14) DEFLATES : seed< <> flat
16) UNVEIL : u---n,v--e,i-----l : 'hangers-on' are supposedly the outside letters . . . hmmm
17) PSEUDO : hm(Sioux,dough)
18) STRATEGY : stra(get<)y : so wanted it to be Stratego - I loved that game.
19) SEED : ddef : where the past tense of see isn't see-d. I like the simplicity of the idea.
20) STUD MUFFIN : stud-,muffin' : an ugly phrase really.
22) INTREPID : I,(di(pert)n)<
24) ANKARA : -ank-,a-r-a- : clunk city, nothing elegant to see here.
25) TROD : t--,rod
26) PARIS GREEN : p(greasier)*----n

DOWN
2) LIECHTENSTEINER : lie,ch,ten,Steiner : of the Rudolf variety.
3) SHEEP : s(h)eep
4) SALUTATIONS : (soul, attains)* : I don't mind this sort of trick - one hi but two his.
5) AFFECTS : a(ff/s---p)ects
6) EAR : -r-a-e- <
7) PALM CIVET : Sp(psalm,pivot) : meh.
8) SOMETHING FIERCE : ddef
12) SQUARE MEALS : ddef : coz they're round.
15) LAUNDERED : (la,un,der)ed
18) SHUDDER : sh,udder
21) FAKIR : dunno ! : cocktail for K ? Answer correct ? I'll keep wondering.
23) PIP : ddef

I think on balance it was slightly frustrating and had not a lot of ingenuity. A couple of nice ideas didn't cover the cracks sufficiently.
4/10.

Okay, I seem to have discovered how FAKIR works.

KIR is a wine cocktail and 'with nothing as garnish' equates to 'FA on top'. Fanny Adams, if you want the genteel version.

7d Pathetic clue.

21 According to Chambers nothing, in the polite version, is 'sweet Fanny Adams' or 'sweet FA' not Fanny Adams by itself which slang for tinned mutton.

21 The meanings of FA in Wiktionary include both the polite & the impolite:

(vulgar): fuck all
(euphemistic) Fanny Adams

There is no doubt that FA is widely used in everyday speech.
