DA 04/01/19

Post by zinzan » Fri Jan 04, 2019 10:23 am

For me, it was a slowish start. 10ac was in quickly but I then had to do a bit of reading to get a second. The first six or so gradually revealed themselves then it was a snow-balling finish. One or two I'm still not completely convinced by.

ACROSS
1) BUMPER STICKER : Sp(stumper,bicker) : vague definition but enough I suppose.
10) ROUTS : (-tosur)* : 'forfeits' ? A smoother reading would be 'loses'.
11) SHARAPOVA : shar(a)p,hm(over) : ie 'on' being 'over'.
12) GENTEEL : gent,eel : why a '?' ? It seems sensible enough, no ?
13) CONSENT : con,sent
14) ANTIGONE : anti-gone cryptically suggests 'not gone', so 'present'.
16) PERONI : pe(-ro-)n,i
18) TORERO : -tor-,-ero- : 'lapels' is a bit clunky . . . must be something better.
19) FACTOTUM : facto-,tum : from Latin fac! ‘do!’ (imperative of facere) + totum ‘the whole thing’ (neuter of totus). (Copied that).
21) AUSTRAL : (tar---ulas)* : 'snare' ? Yuk.
22) PLUGGER : ddef : who can forget the daily update on Tony Lockett's groin (injury) leading up to the 1996 Grand Final. Riveting.
24) SYNDICATE : (decays,tin)* : blah.
25) AGAVE : -a-,gave : I would've thought 'contents' would imply more than one thing.
26) CONSTELLATION : conste(RN/l-----l)ation

DOWN
2) U-TURN : hm(ewe),turn : ie turn=go off=spoil=sour.
3) PASSENGER TRAINS : (stress,anger,pains)* : &lit and reasonable.
4) RUSTLING : ddef : rustling is too noisy.
5) THATCH : t-----,hatch
6) CHAIN RESTAURANT : cha(in,rest,aura)nt : nice clue.
7) ECO-RESORT : E(cores,or)T
8) PREGNANT PAUSE : cryptdef : of sorts. 'Embodying issue' might be pregnancy.
9) CAPTAIN MARVEL : cap,(rival,meant)*
15) TURNS INTO : OTT< <> urn,sin
17) CAMPBELL : camp,bell
20) PLEASE : p---,hm(lees) : definition ? 'It's said' ? Any thoughts ?
23) GUANO : on,Aug--- <

I reckon overall I was happy enough. There were some small confusions but the clues were okay and the answers varied.
A decent start to 2019.
6/10.

16 As 'middlebrow is to be read as 'middle brow' ie 'ro', this is one clue where a "?' is definitely needed.
