DA 22/02/19

Strangely enough, some parts of today's puzzle seemed very hard. I think you know what I mean.
By the time I had NAVRATILOVA and RAPSCALLION both largely underclued, I wondered, "Does the iPad version have some extra instructions that I may be missing ?". Sure did.

"Some FLOWER-ARRANGING will fit each block of shaded squares, an element ignored by each clue's wordplay. Eight examples, two twice".
Oh. No instructions and no shaded squares. Brilliant.

ACROSS
1) (funnily enough), GRIPE : gri-pe : ie grippe. I have a gripe/bellyache with . . .
4) ENCHILADA : -enc-,(DAHLIA)* : ie hence.
9) NAP : ddef
10) SCHRODINGER : S(ORCHID)*n,---ger : ie mugger.
11) see 14ac
12) AGNES : ag(-----n)es
14) FLOWER-ARRANGING : f(lower)ar-ranging
15) INTERVAL : -inter,-val
17) SCAMPERS : s(camper)s : is it meant to be singular hiker ?
19) BREAST : b---,(ASTER)* : ie bore - ore. We've seen this dug=breast before.
23) BREAK : ddef
24) SIBYLLINE : is<,b(LILY)*-n-e-
25) RAPSCALLION : raps,(LILAC)*,on
27) OMS : --om s---
28) POSTULATE : ??? : [edit] Oh I see. p(LOTUS)*ate : I was distracted by fancy being 'U' and dividing some anagram. Not so.
29) STAIN : -s,-t,-a,in

DOWN
I'll come back to. Got an appointment. . . Back now.
1) GANDALF : flag< <> and : the best wizard of all.
2) IMPERSONATE : imp,(ROSE)*,(neat)*
3) ESSENCE : Essen---,c--------e
4) ETHNIC : -et-,---hn---, --ic-- : on the edge of being a little unwieldy.
5) CLOGGING : C-logging : C for medium grade is taken on trust. I doubt there's actual reference to it.
6) IMITATE : I,m(it)ate
7) ANG : ---ang---
8) AEROSOL : loa- < <>(ROSE)* : ie loaf.
13) NAVRATILOVA : van<,rat,(VIOLA)* : the one that started the rot.
16) BRASILIA : bra--,sili-a : 'sands' being 's and s'. Any 5-letter word with 'and' in the middle is probably to be read this way.
17) SOBER UP : sob,(pure)*
18) PIKACHU : hm(picker,chew)
20) RELENTS : re(Lent)s-
21) TREASON : (ASTER)*,on
22) OBLIGE : (I,globe)*
26) PUS : pus-

Clearly it was a bit of a drama to get finished though not the setter's fault. It would still have been hard but probably a quicker solve.
Drama = 3/10.
