DA 04/05/18

Post by zinzan » Fri May 04, 2018 10:05 am

Had six days now from the last DAbacle. I'm pretty sure I'll manage this week's in a more composed manner.
I thought there may be a theme along the hoax line but it didn't seem very strong. 7dn also made me realise I've had that phrase wrong for only about 35 years or so. Who knew ?

ACROSS
1) PAY OUT ON : pa,yout-,on
5) UPSHOT : up,shot
10) LOUPE : hm(loop) : a new word to me.
11) TRIPLE SEC : (lets,rip)*,e------,c---- : a liqueur of a three stage process.
12) see 23ac
14) DONGA : do-ng,a : also new.
15) see 7dn
16) HIAWATHA : hi-,a-,wa-,tha- : I've always had an impression that Hiawatha was female. Silly me.
18) PRALINES : p(r-a-l-)ines : I don't see 'pine' and 'hunger' as quite equivalent.
19) EMBERS : -embers : we can only trust that embers are optimal to a billy . . . if that take is correct.
22) AD HOC : ad,hm(hock) : a much-used answer in crosswords.
23,12ac) MOVING THE GOALPOSTS : (last, hopes, got)moving : 'upshot' is the 'result' of moving that fodder.
24) BALLERINA : (brie,an)*<>all
25) BRIAR : b-r <> air<
26) GROVEL : grove,---l
27) HEINEKEN : H------,eine,ken

DOWN
1) PELAGIC : pic <> gale<
2) YOU HAD ME AT HELLO : (a,day, out, home)* <> hell : from Jerry Maguire apparently. Not sure why it's significant.
3) USE : hm(youse) : courtesy of Jeff Fenech's repeated use.
4) OBTUSE : -o,--b,-t,use
6) PILTDOWN MAN : lip<,(town,damn)* : an archaeological hoax.
7,15ac) HAS ANOTHER THINK COMING : ddef maybe : always thought 'thing' was the word.
8) TOCCATA : t(occ---)ata
9) MIASMIC : (as,Im)*,mic : is a mic an amplifier ? It feeds one definitely. Don't like it.
13) PONZI SCHEME : (epic,homes)* <> NZ
17) MERMAID : mere-,hm(made) : took a moment to get the secinds right.
18) PEAT BOG : p(eat)b,go<
20) SHERRIN : sh(err)in : I'm told it's a brand of football used by some non-rugby types, whatever that may be . . .
21) AVIATE : (not sure where AVI happens),ate : there's d(AV)e and b(I)g but then what ?
25) BEN : ddef

Here I am, still conscious. It had some good surface but overall nothing special. 4/10.

22 'invoice' is not a homophone indicator; 'in voice' perhaps. DA may think he is above working within the conventions of English, but to we lesser mortals the use of a '!' or a '?' to indicate that something out of the ordinary is going on is the right and proper thing to do.
